I have always been fascinated with Day of the Dead skulls and decided to do one in fused glass. There is a local restaurant in Jacksonville Beach, Taco Lu, and their entire restaurant is decorated with folk art representing Day of the Dead. It's a fun place and has amazing tacos. I am doing a multilayer piece that I learned in Richard La Londe's master class last October. It uses the liquid line technique and glass powders. The actual piece is layered with white powder on the actual kiln shelf, colored glass powder and clear sheet glass. The liquid line technique developed by Richard La Londe uses glass powder and CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose), Arabic gum or another type of liquid binder. I use a boston round to draw the sketch on the clear sheet but you can also use a cake icing bag. Once the lines are dry or you can dry them with a hair dryer then you can sift glass powders inside your design. Since all the azaleas, camellias and dogwoods are in bloom I decided to design my skull with a spring theme. |
